What to ask an agency small-business specialist before a solicitation
Use a specific forecast and a relevant capability to prepare a useful question. A current GSA example shows which questions belong with the specialist or the listed procurement contact.
An agency small-business specialist can help you understand how to engage with the agency and where to find its opportunities. Arrive with a particular area of work, a relevant example of your capability and a question the office can answer. When the question concerns a specific planned procurement, also check the contact named in that forecast.
That preparation makes the exchange easier for both sides. A company may already know the agency's mission and still need to understand which office handles its kind of work, how the agency receives capability information or where future notices will appear. Those are concrete reasons to ask for help.
Choose a forecast that gives the conversation a purpose
Consider GSA's Cisco Hardware for GSA forecast, checked on October 10, 2026. The October 6 listing described new installations and upgrades for the Office of the Chief Information Officer and estimated an October 20 solicitation date. It named Kevin Pope as the small-business specialist and Amanda Montbriand as the point of contact.
A firm with relevant networking hardware delivery experience could use that record to prepare a narrow question about engagement. The record does not establish that the firm is eligible, that its products satisfy a future requirement or that the solicitation will appear on that date. GSA's forecast guidance says planned acquisitions can change or be canceled and that final procurement decisions appear with the solicitation.
The forecast title and listing link give the recipient something identifiable to work with. Include those references instead of asking the office to infer which opportunity you mean from a broad description of your business.
Match the question to the contact
GSA describes its small-business specialists as a source of outreach, training and counseling on contracting with the agency. Its current help page lists the specialists and their coverage. Confirm that information when you prepare your message; a saved contact from last year's event may no longer be the right route.
For the Cisco forecast, an illustrative question for the specialist is: “We have experience delivering network hardware for distributed sites. What is the current GSA process for sharing a brief capability statement relevant to this forecast?” Add a concise, factual example of that experience rather than a long service catalog.
For questions about the planned requirement itself, start with the forecast's named point of contact. GSA's forecast training guidance distinguishes that role from general small-business assistance and advises including the specialist in communications with the point of contact. Read any newer listing instructions first. Once an official notice provides a question process, use that process for the acquisition.
These example questions have not been sent to GSA. They show how to prepare a request that has a clear subject and a useful possible answer.
Research the agency before you write
Open the GSA agency profile in G2X to review the organization and follow its Contract Opps, Vehicles and Awards views. This helps you separate GSA's own operating needs from the work it buys on behalf of other agencies. Check the office on each record before treating it as comparable experience or a likely path for your company.
The manual agency-research workflow is available through G2X's free Community Edition; the agency research guide explains the relevant controls. Pair what you find with the official forecast and the agency's current contact instructions. Keep one short note with the requirement, the capability you can demonstrate, the contact's role and the question you want resolved.
If you have a public forecast export or related document, G2X Lumen can help you assess fit and identify missing information when your account has access. Verify the source and current usage limits. You can do the same preparation by reading the documents and writing the note yourself.
A useful outcome may be a better route for submitting capability information, a source to monitor or a clear reason to focus elsewhere. Record that answer and the date. It gives your next outreach a purpose beyond introducing the company again.

For agents
Prepare a focused small-business outreach question for the right agency contact
- A signed-in G2X account, current official small-business office instructions, a matching current forecast and a truthful capability example.
Confirm the office and current instructions
Read https://www.gsa.gov/small-business/get-help for the current specialist and coverage, and https://www.gsa.gov/small-business/find-opportunities for forecast/outreach guidance. Do not assume a historical contact or appointment practice still applies.
Anchor the question in a specific forecast
Read https://acquisitiongateway.gov/forecast/resources/52452%3Fnid%3D52452 for Cisco Hardware for GSA. The October 6, 2026 listing, checked October 10, named Office of the Chief Information Officer, specialist Kevin Pope, contact Amanda Montbriand and estimated solicitation October 20. Recheck before use. This is a planning forecast subject to change, not eligibility proof or an open solicitation. Retain listing identifier AG52452_1791306760 and URL.
Research the agency context in G2X
Open https://g2x.com/app/agencies/4700 and follow https://g2x.com/docs/understand-market/research-an-agency. Use Overview, Contract Opps, Vehicles and Awards to identify relevant office/work context. Free Community supports this manual agency-research path. Confirm any particular requirement in the original source.
Draft a question for the contact's role
Use the current office/listing instructions. GSA's official Forecast Tools training at https://www.gsa.gov/system/files/Forecast%20Tools%20-%20508%20-%2008262021.pdf routes specific planned-procurement questions to the listed POC and general help to the specialist, with the specialist included in POC communications. Draft a concise request about how to share relevant capabilities; follow an official notice's own question process when it applies. Do not request nonpublic competitive information or send the draft.
