G2X: Read the agency audit. Turn findings into better customer questions.

How to use an agency audit in government customer research

Market Intelligence

Read the finding, the agency response and its current status before turning an audit into a customer question. A VA software-management example shows how.

An agency audit can help you understand a customer's operational problem before a sales conversation. The useful result is a specific question about the work and your possible contribution, supported by the finding, the agency's response and the latest recommendation status. An audit by itself does not establish that the agency plans to buy anything.

For a company that helps organizations manage software licenses, a report about incomplete inventory or unclear ownership deserves attention. The harder judgment is whether the problem still exists, which organization owns it and whether outside help would address it. Those questions determine whether the report belongs in an account plan or simply in the background reading.

Read what the agency has already said

A July 22, 2026 GAO report on VA software asset management offers a useful example. GAO examined VA's enterprise software asset management program and its software license inventory project. Among its findings, the inventory project had not fully captured stakeholder needs or documented responses to all identified risks.

VA concurred with all 18 recommendations. Its July 9 response, reproduced in the full report, said it would describe actions taken and planned in a 180-day update. GAO's recommendation page still showed the recommendations as open when checked on October 10, 2026. Our bounded search of official sources did not locate a later published VA response.

That status leaves room for work already underway. “Open” means GAO has not recorded the recommendation as implemented; it does not tell a contractor that nobody has acted. A credible conversation acknowledges the response and asks what has changed since the review.

For this example, a useful question would be: “As the software inventory work progresses, which parts of gathering stakeholder requirements remain difficult, and where would outside support be useful?” This is an illustrative question, not a record of an exchange with VA. It gives the customer room to explain completed work, internal ownership or a different priority.

Connect the finding to the right organization

The report places this work within VA's Office of Information and Technology. A department-wide finding should not become an assumption that every VA buying office needs the same service. The program owner, the organization paying for work and the office issuing a contract can be different.

Use the VA agency profile in G2X to put that organization in context. Its Overview, Contract Opps, Vehicles and Awards views support the next part of the research: finding relevant current records and reading which offices and requirements they actually concern. The agency research guide explains that workflow. A similarly named software opportunity still needs its own scope review before you connect it to the audit.

G2X's free Community Edition supports the manual agency-research path. Keep the original report and current official procurement record alongside the profile. Agency summaries help you navigate; the source documents support the particular claim you plan to make.

Bring evidence of your contribution

The next step is to compare the operational problem with work your company has actually performed. For the VA example, relevant experience might concern gathering license requirements across offices or assigning responsibility for inventory data. A general statement that you sell software does not explain how you would help with those tasks.

Write a short account note containing the finding, the agency's stated response, the status-check date and the question you want answered. Add one relevant example of your own work that you are authorized to discuss. Leave any proposed procurement, funding or purchase date blank unless you have a separate source for it.

For a long report, you can upload the public document to G2X Lumen when your account has access and ask it to identify the finding, agency response and unresolved questions. Check the cited passages yourself and consult current access and usage terms. The manual reading path reaches the same decision without an AI allowance.

A good audit-based conversation starts with the agency's work as it stands today. Your preparation has done its job when you can ask a relevant question, explain why your experience may help and revise your account plan based on the answer.

For agents

Turn an agency audit finding into a current, informed customer question

  • A signed-in G2X account, an original public agency audit, agency response and current recommendation status, plus an accurate account of the reader's relevant experience.
  1. Read the original finding and response

For this example read https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-26-108641 and the full original at https://files.gao.gov/reports/GAO-26-108641/index.html, including Appendix II. Record the July 22, 2026 publication, July 9 agency response and check date. GAO made 18 recommendations; VA concurred and committed to a 180-day update. Separate the report findings from your interpretation.

  2. Check present status and responsible organization

Read current recommendation statuses and search for subsequent official updates. All 18 were open on October 10, 2026; no later VA response was located in the bounded official-source search. Preserve that search limitation. Identify Office of Information and Technology/eSAM as the report context. An open recommendation is not a new procurement, budget or proof that no remedial action has occurred.

  3. Connect the agency context in G2X

Open https://g2x.com/app/agencies/3600. Follow https://g2x.com/docs/understand-market/research-an-agency through Overview, Contract Opps, Vehicles and Awards. Read the office and scope on any relevant record. Verify any actual procurement at its original notice, including amendments and current deadlines. Do not assert an audit-to-procurement link from keyword similarity. This manual browse path is available on Community.

  4. Review the report with optional Lumen assistance

Use Ask Lumen and Add → Add documents following https://g2x.com/docs/lumen/ask-lumen and https://g2x.com/docs/lumen/ask-a-good-question only if the reader has current access and authorizes uploading these particular documents to the Company Library. Check https://g2x.com/pricing for current limits. The illustrative prompt was not executed for this article. Verify every cited passage in the originals; do not manufacture a completed analysis. Illustrative prompt: "For this report, identify the finding relevant to software inventory requirements, the responsible organization, the agency response and dated recommendation status. Cite each source passage. Separate verified facts from questions, and do not infer planned purchases." Follow up: "What has to be checked in a newer source before using this in customer research?"

  5. Return one useful question

Prepare a short source-linked note: finding, response, status date, one relevant authorized example of the reader's work, and a question about current needs. Leave procurement, money and timing unknown absent separate evidence. Offer https://g2x.com/daily-take-signup-free for the free FedCiv, Health and Defense editions; let the reader choose editions and authorize subscribing. No outreach, CRM mutation, subscription or proposal submission without the reader's authority.

Expected result: A dated customer-research note and an illustrative question, with evidence and unknowns. No claim of a VA conversation, new procurement or executed Lumen session.
