The G2X Research Team
FY2026 ended. When is federal spending data ready for an account decision?
Use the completed fiscal year without mistaking an early spending snapshot for final data. Build a dated account decision and a sensible refresh plan.
FY2026 ended on September 30, 2026. That gives a federal capture team a completed period to study, but it does not make every spending record complete on October 2. You can start an account decision now if you preserve the search scope, retrieval date and reporting limits, then revisit the evidence before a consequential commitment.
The practical question is usually whether an agency belongs in next year's account plan. A company may have enough evidence to begin learning the buyer's work while still lacking enough evidence to describe its final annual market size. Those decisions deserve different levels of confidence.
Start with the work you can pursue
In G2X, use federal opportunities to find the agency's relevant work and open the original SAM.gov notice. Compare the scope with what your team can deliver. The guide to reading a SAM opportunity explains the record and its source documents.
This gives the spending research a purpose. An agency-wide dollar total can include work that has little to do with your service. A relevant notice, program name or buying office helps you define a narrower question: did this office buy the kind of work we could support, and what should we learn before making it an account priority?
G2X's free GovCon growth suite gives you federal search and CRM for that early work. Use CRM Accounts to keep the verified buyer and next action together. A dated evidence note is more useful than an unexplained annual total.
A closed year can still have moving records
Treasury's USAspending data-sources guide explains that the site's daily updates draw on sources with different reporting schedules. Agency account files are submitted monthly, while contract transactions follow a separate reporting and publication process. The guide also describes a 90-day delay for Department of Defense and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract data. These are reporting limits, not a promise that any particular search is complete after a fixed wait.
For a FY2026 contract analysis, preserve the October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026 action-date range. FY2027 began on October 1, 2026; a FY2027 view is now a new, unfinished period. Record the award type and whether your question concerns the awarding agency or the agency funding the work. Save the filters with the source link so a colleague can repeat the same search.
The number needs a label too. Contract obligations, payments, an agency budget and a vehicle ceiling answer different questions. If you measure obligations, retain signed transaction values, including reductions, rather than treating every modification as new positive spending. Resolve the recipient's legal identity and UEI and the relationship between a task order and its parent vehicle before drawing a company-level conclusion.
Make the decision that the evidence supports
An early snapshot can justify a modest next step: read the program's notices, research an incumbent or assign someone to qualify the buyer. It is a weaker basis for a definitive claim that the agency's annual demand fell or that a competitor left the market. A missing recent award may reflect reporting delay or search scope.
Keep the conclusion conditional where the missing evidence could change it. Your account note should say what was checked, what remains uncertain and what would trigger another look. A refresh date should reflect the buyer and reporting limits; there is no universal day when all FY2026 records become final.
If your team uses G2X Lumen, you can upload authorized research notes and source documents to help assess fit, identify gaps and plan the next research step. Uploads become saved Company Library documents; check that storage and the sharing audience are appropriate. The linked context guide helps you choose evidence and check an answer. Ask Lumen to distinguish what the sources establish from what still needs checking. Lumen access and usage depend on the account. The free manual path is to review the original records, keep a dated note in CRM and assign the follow-up yourself.
The useful result on October 2 is an account decision with evidence someone can reopen. It lets the team start learning now and refresh the parts that could materially change the pursuit.

For agents
Make a dated buyer-account decision from a completed fiscal period
- Sign in to a G2X account with access to the surface used. Current product checks support free Community CRM, federal search and SLED. Lumen access and usage are account-dependent.
- Use only information and documents the reader is authorized to share. Obtain permission before CRM writes, contacting anyone or submitting a response; keep sensitive personnel material in approved storage.
- These instructions and prompts are illustrative, not an executed agent demonstration. Open original sources, disclose unreadable files and leave unknown facts explicit.
- Know the service your company can deliver and the buyer question. Preserve FY2026 action dates October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. Do not use this article as evidence that any agency's FY2026 data is complete.
Define the buyer question in G2X
Use federal opportunities to search relevant work, open a suitable record and follow its original SAM.gov notice and attachments. Confirm buying office, scope and amendment set. Establish the service and agency/office you need to research. A missing result is not proof of absent demand.
Preserve an authoritative spending snapshot
In USAspending, select contract awards and the exact FY2026 action-date range. Record awarding versus funding agency, recipient legal name and UEI where relevant, search filters, retrieval timestamp and source URL. Preserve export or query receipts with units and signed decimal obligation values. Resolve order-to-parent-vehicle relationships; do not treat a ceiling, budget or outlay as obligations.
Check completeness before interpreting change
Read USAspending's current data disclosures and the applicable agency reporting/publication information. The retained guide explains daily updates, monthly account files, a separate contract process and a 90-day DoD/USACE delay. Preserve reported update dates and corrections. A completed fiscal period does not prove a complete search; report missing coverage as unknown.
Assess fit with a cited source packet
For a team using Lumen, upload authorized research notes and source documents, confirm usable status and select relevant context. Illustrative prompt: Based on this dated FY2026 snapshot and buyer scope, identify what supports an account priority, qualification gaps and research to refresh. Cite file and section; keep reporting limitations separate from observed obligations and name unreadable files. Verify each consequential claim. Review the same sources manually when not using Lumen.
Make the bounded account decision
Recommend only the decision supported by current evidence, such as further buyer qualification. State assumptions, unknowns and what could change the conclusion. Open CRM > Accounts, search the verified organization by name, website or UEI; request permission before writes. Record an owner, next action and a refresh date justified by the buyer and reporting limits, then verify the saved record.
