Free federal competitive intelligence: what to look for before FY2027
Use company identities, award records and recent news to research federal competitors for free before FY2027.
You can build useful federal competitive intelligence for free from public award records, company announcements, procurement notices and the G2X GovCon Directory. The advantage comes from connecting those sources to a decision: where to compete, whom to approach or which assumption about a rival needs to change.
Some capture teams call this "black hat" research. The label can make it sound more mysterious than it is. The strongest findings often come from ordinary public evidence that other teams have not connected carefully.
Start with the company you actually mean
A brand name, a legal contractor and a corporate group are not always the same thing. That matters when you attribute work to a competitor. A parent company's announcement may discuss an entire business while an award belongs to a specific subsidiary or contracting entity.

The Booz Allen Hamilton Directory record shows a UEI alongside the company name. That identity is a useful anchor for examining records; it does not mean every subsidiary's work belongs under the same identifier. Our guide to researching a contractor by UEI explains why this is worth resolving early.
A concrete current example: on August 24, 2026, Booz Allen announced the completed acquisition of Ultra I&C's Mission Solutions business. A competitor assessment written before that announcement may need updating. The acquisition is a reason to investigate changes in capabilities and market position, not evidence that a future contract has already been won.
Read awards for the buying pattern
A large contract total can attract attention while answering very little about your pursuit. What was bought? Which office bought it? Through which vehicle? Is the figure obligated funding, an order value or a ceiling? Are you looking at a completed period or an unfinished fiscal year?
For quantitative work, go directly to USAspending and retain the query, period and underlying records. Use the Directory to investigate the company and follow relevant record links. Do not treat a profile's displayed total as a complete, current measure of a rival's addressable market.
The difference between ceilings and obligations matters here. A vehicle's maximum value is not revenue already earned by one company, and a historical obligation does not promise an FY2027 renewal.
The useful competitive question might be whether an office repeatedly buys a particular specialty, whether a rival has entered a buyer you care about, or whether several awards point to a delivery model your firm could support. Each calls for different evidence.
Let recent news change a specific assumption
An acquisition, executive appointment or announced award deserves space in a competitive brief when it changes your reasoning. Merely adding a news paragraph makes the report longer.
For example, an acquired capability could strengthen a rival in one part of a requirement while leaving a different gap open for a partner. That is a hypothesis. Check the acquired business's actual scope, the relevant legal entities and the work required before treating it as a strategic conclusion.
Give each finding a practical consequence: investigate this account, revise this comparison, ask this partner question or stop spending time on this lead. Findings without consequences tend to become a news archive nobody revisits.
Use Lumen to challenge your competitive story
The natural-language question for G2X Lumen can be direct:
Review our competitive view of these companies for this FY2027 requirement. Separate documented facts from our hypotheses. Use recent company news and cited award records to identify assumptions that need updating. Explain what would change our bid or teaming decision, and identify evidence we still need.
Supply the candidate records and requirement context, using the Lumen question guide. An answer that identifies a gap in your reasoning may be more valuable than a confident ranking.
