G2X: Find public utility work. Research the buyer behind the service.

Find public utility contracts your service business can deliver

Market Intelligence

Start in G2X SLED, identify the utility buying the work and verify its procurement route before building an estimate.

To find public utility contracts, start in G2X’s state, local and education opportunity search with the service you provide and the area you can cover. Then verify which utility is buying the work and where it publishes the official requirement. Search for the work itself, such as pump maintenance, electrical testing or vegetation management, as well as the utility’s name.

A service business may already work on the same equipment for commercial customers. The difficult part is finding the public buyer and deciding whether the contract’s coverage area, access conditions and service obligations fit the crew available. A utility’s familiar name does not answer those questions.

G2X’s SLED research guide describes the state, jurisdiction and source filters and how to review an opportunity’s documents. Coverage follows individual procurement portals, so an empty search is a reason to check the utility’s official purchasing page too.

Confirm the organization and its purchasing route

Public utility buying can sit with a city department, a municipal utility or a separate district. The organization serving an address may use a purchasing system different from the city’s general bid page. Confirm its official identity and the office issuing the requirement before creating an account or preparing a response.

The Eugene Water & Electric Board’s contracting page is a useful example. EWEB identifies itself as a public entity chartered by the City of Eugene. Its stated contracting needs include engineering consulting, trade services, construction, goods and equipment. It directs suppliers to OregonBuys and explains how to search for EWEB as the organization.

Kansas City’s Board of Public Utilities supplier page describes purchasing for electric and water service and directs vendors to DemandStar for current and past bids. These are examples of verified purchasing routes, not claims that a particular contract is open today. Follow the current links and read the issued documents before relying on any deadline.

Decide whether the service conditions fit

Consider a company that maintains pumps within a practical driving radius. An opportunity for scheduled inspections could suit its existing crews. A requirement for emergency response across several distant sites may need a different staffing plan, even if the equipment is familiar.

Read the scope for the number and location of assets, required response times, permitted work hours, customer access arrangements and what the buyer expects after each visit. The report, test record or service history can be part of the delivery. Ask the estimator to price those obligations along with the physical work.

For field services, confirm any required licenses, safety qualifications, insurance and site procedures from the actual requirement. Do not infer them from another jurisdiction’s contract. The practical decision is whether your company can support the promised service consistently, including the conditions that are less visible in a short opportunity summary.

Keep a small, useful buyer list

Choose a few utilities whose service needs and geography fit your business. Use G2X CRM to retain the verified organization, official purchasing link and a concrete next action. Search for the account first so your team does not split the research between duplicate records.

Community Edition includes SLED research and CRM. SLED records do not expose Add to pipeline or Watch, so keep the follow-up with the CRM account. A Saved View reruns the search; it does not promise an alert for every new utility posting.

When the documents are extensive, approved public files can go into G2X Lumen to assess fit, identify unanswered service conditions and prepare questions for the response. Lumen access is separate from Community Edition. The free manual path is the same source review and a written fit decision. Either way, the result should be a short buyer list with a supported reason to pursue each organization.

For agents

Find a reachable public utility buyer and assess service fit

  • A G2X account with SLED and CRM access, the service and geography the user authorizes you to research, and access to original public documents. Community Edition supports the manual search/account workflow. Coverage is portal-by-portal; SLED has no Add to pipeline or Watch. Lumen is separate and files require approved storage/audience. Illustrative instructions only.
  1. Start in G2X SLED

Open Opportunities → State, Local, and Education at https://g2x.com/app/opportunities/sled. Search the authorized service terms and geography. Use State, Jurisdiction Type, Due Window and Source where relevant. Read the current results rather than assuming a federal code filter applies. Record useful candidates and their source links; an empty result does not prove no utility work exists.

  2. Confirm the actual public buyer

Open each relevant SLED record and review Overview, Opportunity Summary and Documents. Follow the official source to establish the issuing organization and public status, exact notice identifier, current status, response deadline/timezone and any amendments. Use the utility's official purchasing page to verify its portal. EWEB and BPU in the article illustrate routes only, not a current bid or executed G2X search.

  3. Assess crew and service fit

From the issued package extract sites, service frequency, response times, permitted work hours, required reports, licenses, insurance and access conditions. Cite the document and section. Compare only to company capacity the user supplied. Return pass, unresolved or unsuitable with reasons; do not invent assets, personnel or qualifications.

  4. Prepare the review manually or in Lumen

Manually write a fit brief, or with authority and Lumen access attach approved public files using https://g2x.com/docs/lumen/ask-lumen. Illustrative prompt: 'Assess these utility requirements against the supplied service area and crew capacity. Cite each required service condition. Separate supported fit, missing evidence and questions for the buyer. Do not assume capacity or that the bid is still open.' Check the result against original documents and current portal status.

  5. Retain a next action only when authorized

In CRM → Accounts, search the organization by verified name, website or UEI before creating anything. When authorized, record the purchasing source and the approved next action with owner/date. Preserve unrelated notes and reopen the record to confirm. SLED bids cannot be added to a pursuit through this workflow. Saving a search view is optional and needs authority; it reruns a search and does not guarantee alerts.
