Finding vendors for FY2027 requirements: a better starting point for federal buyers
Use free GovCon Directory research to discover plausible suppliers, test the breadth of the market and prepare better questions for industry.
Federal buyers can use the free G2X GovCon Directory to find companies with potentially relevant agency experience, contract history and capabilities before an FY2027 requirement reaches solicitation. Its value is in building a better starting set for market research. A directory match alone cannot establish that a vendor can meet the requirement.
In September 2026, the approaching October 1 federal fiscal-year boundary creates a useful reason to revisit supplier assumptions. A team that starts with the last acquisition's vendor list may miss a capable entrant, a specialist outside its usual NAICS search or a company whose business has changed.
Search for the outcome you need to buy
Suppose an office needs systems-design support for a health program. A search limited to companies whose primary NAICS is 541512 sounds reasonable. But a firm can perform relevant work under that code while having a different primary registration. That distinction changes which suppliers appear before a researcher has read a single capability statement.
The GovCon Directory separates Primary NAICS from NAICS Past Performance and Agency Past Performance. Its additional facets include performance fiscal year, PSC past performance, vehicles, geography and socioeconomic status. Those are useful ways to test a market from more than one direction.

This HHS systems-design search illustrates how the filters work together. It is a research example, not a claim that every result meets a particular agency's requirement. The company research documentation explains how to examine an individual record and its supporting evidence.
Start broad enough to discover plausible alternatives. If the first search is "has already worked for this exact agency," the result may simply reproduce the existing supplier base. A second search focused on the technical work can reveal firms with experience elsewhere that deserve a closer look.
Turn search results into questions for industry
Past performance is evidence of previous work. It leaves current questions unanswered: available capacity, technical approach, personnel, delivery location and willingness to compete. A vehicle reference introduces another question about the appropriate acquisition route and the relevant contract holder.
A useful research note therefore explains why a supplier appears relevant and what remains to be established. "Has performed related work; need to understand experience with this operating environment" is more helpful than a score that conceals the underlying judgment.
Use multiple sources. SBA's Small Business Search is another free supplier-discovery resource. Agency outreach, sources-sought responses and vendor discussions can uncover capabilities that an awards-based search misses. The FAR Companion's market-research discussion describes several research approaches; the acquisition team's applicable procedures govern the actual procurement.
Ask Lumen to expose the gaps in the evidence
G2X Lumen, the GovCon Growth Agent, offers a natural-language way to work through the supplier question. The useful request is more precise than "find the best vendors":
Help research suppliers for this FY2027 requirement. Identify companies with evidence of relevant capabilities, including plausible suppliers beyond the incumbent agency base. For each, cite the source, explain the match and list questions for industry. Distinguish a registered classification, prior work and an unverified capability claim.
Attach or describe the requirement and identify the records you want considered. The Lumen question guide explains how to use page context and references. Treat the resulting analysis as a research aid; inspect the cited evidence before carrying it into your acquisition work.
This approach also helps separate two different outputs. A supplier-discovery list should be broad enough to support market understanding. A procurement determination must follow the applicable process and evidence. Giving a polished shortlist a more authoritative label does not make the underlying research stronger.
Keep the research useful to the next person
Record the requirement version, search terms, sources and reasons for including a company. Note meaningful gaps without treating absence from one database as absence from the market. Another member of the acquisition team should be able to understand how the list was formed and continue the inquiry.

Finding vendors for FY2027 requirements: a better starting point for federal buyers
- The user's target market, requirement or relationship objective.
- G2X Community Edition for the free Directory, opportunity and CRM work; Lumen is a separate agent offering.
Describe the requirement
Ask for the outcome, technical scope, delivery location and known acquisition constraints. Use only material the user is authorized to share. Establish whether the task is broad supplier discovery or research on a specific list.
Open in G2XSearch beyond familiar suppliers
Use agency, award NAICS, PSC and other relevant Directory facets. Compare a buyer-specific search with a capability-focused search. Do not exclude a firm solely because its primary NAICS differs or it lacks prior work for this agency.
Open in G2XRecord evidence and gaps
Open company records, source awards and current registrations as appropriate. Supplement with SBA Small Business Search and relevant public agency research. Distinguish past work, self-described capability and current capacity; a directory result is not a qualification determination.
Open in G2XPrepare an industry inquiry brief
Return candidate record links, reasons for inclusion, source dates and questions for industry. A Lumen request should include the requirement and cited references. Do not present an unexecuted prompt as a completed supplier evaluation.

Expected result: A supplier-discovery brief with traceable evidence, research limitations and questions for industry.
